Generous donations for DLRG: New diving group rescues in water accidents!

In these festive days, the issue of water safety seems to be particularly important. Gerold Jürgens, managing director of IRB Iso-Rüst-Bau GmbH from Lubmin, made an important contribution to the creation of a DLRG (German Life Saving Society) diving group with his donation of 750 euros. This initiative has widespread support, especially given the increasing number of water accidents in the region. Jürgens emphasizes how crucial a rapid response group is in an emergency, because the next group of divers is currently based at the professional fire department in Stralsund and is therefore not always on the scene quickly.

The need to be able to provide quick help on site is clear. The application for inclusion in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district's release order has already been submitted, and the district administrator has assured his support. This innovation could not only speed up the rescue of people in danger, but also strengthen preventive measures against drowning accidents. Because, as current statistics show, the number of drownings in Germany rose to an alarming 378 in 2023, with a particularly high number in inland waters that are often unguarded ( German Naval Association reports ).

Community support

Jürgens is not alone in his concern: the Lions Club “Philipp Otto Runge” Wolgast, for example, donated 1,000 euros. The total amount of donations for the new diving group is already 1180 euros. This shows the spirit of the community and the relevance of the topic, because the important aspect of swimming training for children in particular should also be supported. “I hope that many more corporate donations will come together,” said Jürgens, emphasizing that swimming lessons for children are essential to prevent future accidents.

In the DLRG, emergency divers are part of public emergency response and disaster control. They are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year via the emergency number and are urgently needed, especially in view of the upcoming winter months and possible flooding. During floods, dikes are submerged and checked for damage - here, too, the training of divers can be crucial in order to be able to intervene decisively in critical situations ( DLRG provides information about operational diving ).

The training of operational divers

The training of future operational divers is comprehensive and demanding. With a minimum age of 15 years and already acquired swimming badges, participants meet the first requirements. The DLRG attaches great importance to preparation under extreme conditions and increasing physical fitness. At least ten dives must be carried out annually under realistic conditions.

The following training levels are available:

  • DLRG-Einsatztaucher Stufe 1
  • DLRG-Einsatztaucher Stufe 2
  • Taucheinsatzführer
  • Signalmann
  • DLRG-Lehrtaucher
  • DLRG-Multiplikator Einsatztauchen

Given the increasing number of water accidents, it is even more important that these trainers and divers are trained to ensure that rapid and efficient responses can also be carried out in the region. This makes the next steps towards founding the diving group all the more relevant.

The OZ Christmas campaign, which collects donations for the DLRG, is another step in the right direction. There is no better time than now to show that we care about the safety of our waters. Anyone who would like to help can transfer their donation to the specified account and thus contribute to safety on the coasts and in the waters of Western Pomerania-Greifswald ( Ostsee-Zeitung reports ).
