Shock accident in Wolgast: Four injured in crash on B111!
A serious traffic accident occurred today in Wolgast, in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, in which a total of four people were injured. The accident was caused by a 78-year-old driver whose driving style is currently unknown. According to reports from tagesschau.de The driver crossed into the oncoming lane and initially crashed into the rear of an oncoming vehicle. The 64-year-old driver of this car was also injured.
But that wasn't all. Another collision occurred when the 78-year-old's car crashed into a car containing a 5-year-old child and his 45-year-old father. The impact was so violent that the car that caused the accident was thrown back several meters and crashed into a tree. The father and child's car turned on its own axis and came to a stop in the opposite direction of travel. All injured people had to be taken to a clinic.
Traffic accidents and older road users
While there is currently no certainty about the cause of the accident in this particular case, the incident raises important questions about the road safety of older drivers. A study by the ADAC shows that the ability to react and the ability to see can deteriorate in seniors, which is why they should regularly and critically check their ability to drive. adac.de emphasizes that older road users are often more vulnerable than dangerous, and that over the years the number of accidents involving drivers over 65 has increased.
In the 2023 statistics, over 68% of the main perpetrators of traffic accidents resulting in personal injury were over 65 years old. Among those over 75, this proportion even rose to over 76%. This data, published by destatis.de, highlight a worrying trend that shows older drivers in particular are involved in accidents, even though they make up a smaller proportion of the overall population.
Recommendations for seniors
However, age alone should not be used as a measure of fitness to drive. ADAC experts therefore recommend that older drivers regularly check their health conditions and, if necessary, consult a doctor. Programs such as “Sicher mobil” also offer helpful tips and support for seniors on the road to stay safe on the road.
The material damage in today's accident is estimated at around 17,000 euros, and the federal highway was temporarily closed during the rescue work. Given the number of vehicles involved - three in total - it is to be hoped that such tragic incidents can be avoided in the future. Responsibility in road traffic lies not only with the legislator, but also with every individual who sits behind the wheel.
