Traffic chaos on Usedom: Complete closure of the B111 puts holidaymakers in distress!
The East German island of Usedom, known for its beautiful beaches and idyllic holiday resorts, is facing a major challenge. As moin.de reports, accessibility to the popular holiday island is being significantly affected by construction work.
In the coming week, specifically between June 17th and 20th, 2025, federal highway 111 near Wolgast will be completely closed at night from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. This measure affects the section between the post office crossing and the harbor. An important point: A half-way closure is not possible because the road width is not sufficient to ensure the safety of both the construction site workers and road users, according to nordkurier.de.
Detours and traffic information
What does this mean for drivers? Travelers heading towards Usedom must expect diversions. In the city center, traffic will be rerouted via Werftstrasse and Kronwiekstrasse. Coming back from Usedom, there are also alternative routes via the street at Fischmarkt, Bleichstraße, Wilhelmstraße, Baustraße and Robert-Koch-Straße. Trucks will be rerouted via the Zecheriner Bridge, which is particularly important at night.
The construction work is also dependent on the weather, which can lead to possible delays. However, if the schedule is adhered to, it could become necessary to continue the full closure on the night of June 20th to 21st if the work is not completed on time.
Traffic problems in the south of the island
The district road VG 44, which could act as a further diversion, will remain closed until May, with the exception of the fire brigade, emergency services and school traffic. These road closures are part of a comprehensive investment of 171.1 million euros in road construction in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The plans call for important construction and renovation work to be carried out over around 41 kilometers.
The demand for a relaxing holiday on Usedom remains high, but in order to make the journey easier, holidaymakers have to be prepared for longer travel times and diversions. A good hand when driving and a little patience are required in the coming weeks!
