125 years of the Chamber of Crafts: Ceremony in Aurich promises innovation and fun!
Anniversary celebration in Aurich: The Chamber of Crafts for East Frisia looks back on 125 years of success. This important occasion was duly celebrated with an open day on September 21, 2025. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., numerous visitors flocked to the chamber grounds on Straße des Handwerks 2 to experience first-hand the creativity and diversity of East Frisian crafts under the motto “Experience craftsmanship – shape the future”.
The origins of the Chamber of Crafts go back to April 28, 1908, when it was founded in Osnabrück. Today, the approximately 5,700 member companies in the region play a crucial role as employers and trainers. The President of the Chamber of Crafts, Albert Lienemann, who has been in office for ten years, emphasized the adaptability and reliability of the East Frisian trade, which employs over 35,000 people and has around 2,200 trainees in various professions. Together, the companies generate an impressive turnover of around 3.5 billion euros.
Training offers and modern technologies
There are around 130 job profiles for prospective apprentices in the German craft sector, and the importance of technological progress in training is constantly growing. An example of this is the painting and varnishing training, which is designed in a state-of-the-art manner using virtual spray guns and VR glasses. Visitors had the opportunity to take part in many hands-on activities, such as controlling mini-excavators or sawing wood, which was exciting for young and old alike.
In the newly modernized training workshops, craftsmanship could be experienced up close. Visitors were able to get hands-on in carpentry, construction, metal and welding as well as automotive technology. Participatory activities included troubleshooting in the automotive trade, controlling agricultural machinery and working on carpentry workbenches. Here guests also had the opportunity to work with copper pipes and make hearts, which delighted both teenagers and adults.
A worthy celebration with special guests
For the ceremonial opening, the event was opened by Albert Lienemann in the motor vehicle hall. Jörg Tapper, head master of the East Frisia confectioners' guild, cut the anniversary cake after master confectioner Sarah Schweerke presented her specialties. The day was musically framed by the brass class from the Aurich secondary school and the singer and guitarist Thomas Kümper. Physical well-being was also taken care of: a barbecue stand and drinks ensured a relaxed atmosphere.
A special highlight was the exhibition of sports cars by the Porsche Club Ostfriesland e.V. and the Porsche Center Oldenburg, which was very well received by visitors. The DKMS also offered the opportunity to register as a stem cell donor, which underlined the social commitment of the event.
Crafts are proving to be an attractive and sustainable profession that also offers good earning potential. Trainees can hope for an attractive salary during their training, as many professions in the construction industry are linked to collective agreements. There are also numerous training and further education opportunities that further improve career opportunities.
The central role of the Chamber of Crafts in the region became clear on the anniversary day: it not only promotes training, but also the craft itself through innovative strength and modern know-how. For anyone looking for a career perspective, crafts offer a promising opportunity to further develop their skills in a creative environment.
