Drama in the third division derby: HSG Varel saves a draw against OHV Aurich!
Late on Saturday evening, the Manfred-Schmidt-Sporthalle in Altjührden was transformed into a simmer of emotions as HSG Varel and OHV Aurich met in an exciting third division derby. With 900 enthusiastic spectators, the hall was filled to capacity and provided the perfect backdrop for a game in which the tension increased with every goal.
In an exciting duel, the game continued evenly for 60 minutes. The lead changed hands several times between both teams. In the first half, the guests from Aurich were able to gain a small lead. But the Varelers were undeterred and managed to turn the tide in the second half with a strong team performance. When Nicholas Beck and Luca de Boer scored one after the other, it meant a 25:22 lead for Varel.
The exciting final spurt
HSG coach Arek Blacha was visibly relieved after the game and praised the willpower of his players. “We never gave up despite difficult phases,” said Blacha. His counterpart from Aurich, Sven Suton, noted the draw favorably, but expressed critical thoughts about the final decision that led to Wendlandt's goal.
