Skydiving over East Frisia: Jastram about adrenaline and risks!
In the shadow of Felix Baumgartner's tragic death, skydiving continues on the North Sea coast. Robert “Bärchen” Jastram, an experienced skydiver with over 8,000 jumps to his name, is currently leading a group of 22 participants who are taking to the skies over the beautiful East Frisian islands of Juist, Borkum and Norderney. This reports NWZonline.
Jastram describes how he was inspired to skydive when he was five years old by a sports documentary. It has been his passion ever since. Despite the risks, he emphasizes that skydiving is a safe sport and should not be considered an extreme sport. “It's the risks that make it so attractive,” he explains, emphasizing that the group consists of experienced professionals, including German champions and world record holders with more than 1,000 jumps.
The challenge of skydiving
However, Jastram also draws attention to the dangers that this sport brings with it. He reports on dangerous situations in which the parachute did not open. Statistically speaking, this happens about every 700 jumps, but it has already happened to him about eight times. In his calm manner, he reminds you that every jump should be well planned and that you should not lull yourself into a false sense of security.
Amid these activities, the shadow of Felix Baumgartner hovers over the skydiving community. The 56-year-old extreme athlete recently died in a paragliding accident in Italy. He reportedly lost control over Porto Sant'Elpidio and fell near a hotel pool. This tragic news also moved Jastram, who knew Baumgartner personally. "It's tragic what happened. He was a completely different type of skydiver who lived in extreme situations," said Jastram, who emphasized that Baumgartner's willingness to take risks made him a legendary, if tragic, symbol of extreme sports.
The importance of security
While Jastram’s group enjoys the freedom of the jump, he emphasizes the importance of safety and responsibility. “Every jump should bring joy, but safety comes first.” While he praises the breathtaking view over the East Frisian Islands, he reflects on Baumgartner's impressive achievements, including his famous altitude record, which made him an international celebrity. “He went beyond the ordinary and impressed the world with his courage,” said Jastram, while emphasizing the need to work safely in everyday life.
The excitement of skydiving remains even as the community mourns recent events. Jastram and his group continue their jumps and experience the freedom of the air. “These are moments that take your breath away,” he says, summing up the emotions that every jump brings, both opportunities and dangers. Despite everything, he looks to the future with optimism - with respect for the past.
What happens in the sky reflects the complexity of life, in which risk and beauty often go hand in hand. “That's what a jump is all about,” Jastram concludes his thoughts, remembering the flights that for him are more than just sport - they are a way to live life to the fullest.
