Not long ago, the Lidl in Aurich was a popular meeting place for one- and two-person households, but a devastating fire on February 9, 2021 turned the entire business upside down. The major fire not only left a wound in the neighborhood, but also caused enormous financial damage, amounting to seven figures. But fortunately there were no injuries. The emergency services had to do their best under extreme conditions, as freezing temperatures and difficult extinguishing conditions made extinguishing work difficult. A new beginning
The new Lidl branch will not only replace the old one, but also represent a step towards a more sustainable future. The new building will be equipped with environmentally friendly technology, including a modern structure and a glass front that provides plenty of daylight. With a sales area of around 1,500 square meters, the new store will be almost twice as large as the previous branch, which was only 800 square meters. The focus is on freshness: fruit, vegetables, baked goods, fresh meat and dairy products are the focus of the offering.
A special highlight: Lidl has made it its mission to completely avoid fossil fuels. Heating and air conditioning in the new branch are guaranteed by 100% certified green electricity. Lidl is thus following the trend of sustainable building and recently even secured the gold basic certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). This not only shows Lidl's commitment to sustainable construction methods, but also makes the supermarket the first food retailer to receive this certificate Lidl communicates.
Future-oriented standards
Lidl's new building specifications, which were developed together with the DGNB, set new standards in terms of sustainable construction. From now on, all new branches should work towards climate-neutral operations by 2045 and submit a climate risk analysis. In addition, criteria such as the use of certified wood materials and high indoor air quality are taken into account in the planning.
