On yesterday's matchday 1st Bundesliga air pistol There were both bright spots and shadows for the Schirum riflemen in Aurich. The start of the season was mixed: While the Schirum team triumphed against Wathlingen 4-1, the next day they suffered a heavy defeat against PSV Olympia Berlin 0-5.

The match against Wathlingen took place in the IGS hall in Aurich, which attracted almost 200 spectators. Lucy Evans from Wathlingen showed a strong performance and scored 376 rings, but narrowly lost to Sander Nooij, who secured the honorary point with 379 rings. Other shooters from Schirum such as Marcel Stürken (377:372 against Philip Aranowski), Dennis Grünhoff (368:367 against Sarah Tauermann) and Maik Ritter (374:372 against Cedric Rohbani) were also able to convince. The only downside was the point deduction from Eike Fürst, who lost out to Sarah Oehns (358:369). Team boss Andreas Slink also acted as coach because Jörg Kropp was unable to attend.

Defeat against strong Berlin opponents

The following day, however, the team did not show their best side against Berlin. The guests from the capital ended up with an impressive overall result of 1,887 rings, well ahead of the Schirumians, who only achieved 1,851 rings. Marcel Stürken came close to the honor point, but also lost to Leon Kabisch (373:376). Schirum's team now has to gather themselves quickly because the next challenge is already around the corner.

So far, the 2024/25 season – the highest competition class in German team air pistol shooting – has been mixed for the Schirum team. The league, which consists of two groups of 12 teams each, lets shooters compete in a “man-to-man” mode. Each team is obliged to measure their strength in a series of 40 shots, with no tenths being counted. In the event of a tie, a shoot-off will be held.

Outlook for the upcoming competitions

The Schirumers now have until the next competition in mid-October (October 18th and 19th) to improve their form. The matches take place against the reigning German runner-up and SSG Teutoburger Wald in Langerwehe near Düren. Schirum has often lost against Wathlingen in the past, but with the first win in the history of the club's meetings, a lot could change this season.

The league itself has its origins in 1997, when it was founded by German Rifle Association was brought into being. A total of 24 teams are competing this season, with ESV Weil am Rhein being the current title holder and SGi Waldenburg being the record champions. Those who can assert themselves over the course of the season have the chance to reach the grand finale, which usually takes place in February.

The Schirumer Schützen have a lot at stake and will do everything they can to reduce the gap to the top in the coming period and to win over the spectators - after all, the support of the fans is an important nucleus for success.
