Uber plans 100,000 robotaxis: the future of mobility is here!

Uber has big plans in the area of autonomous mobility. The American driving service provider wants to become the leading platform for robotaxis from various manufacturers. According to the NWZ Online Uber plans to offer at least 100,000 self-driving cars on its platform. The cooperation with Nvidia, which will deliver state-of-the-art car computers for autonomous driving, is a central part of this strategy.

## Cooperations with leading automobile manufacturers

As part of these ambitious plans, Uber has secured the support of several well-known vehicle manufacturers. In addition to Nvidia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis – the parent company of Opel – and the innovative manufacturer Lucid are also on board. The first vehicles equipped with Nvidia's Drive AGX Hyperion 10 should be on the road from 2027. Interestingly, at least 5,000 vehicles from Stellantis are said to be among the first robotaxis. Mercedes-Benz and Lucid are also planning self-driving models that will be introduced in various countries in the future.
Information from the Small newspaper reveal that Nvidia plays an essential role with its AI-based infrastructure.

## Outlook for the future

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is optimistic about the positive impact of autonomous vehicles on cities. Self-driving taxis are currently being tested in some cities in the USA and China. The service provider Waymo, for example, already has 2,000 self-driving vehicles in active use in San Francisco, Los Angeles and three other cities. Tesla also recently launched the first robotaxis in Austin, Texas. In Germany, there are plans to introduce robotaxis from 2024. Meanwhile, the Chinese company Baidu is also entering the European market by offering self-driving cars via the ride-hailing app Lyft, although approvals from the German authorities are still pending.

The introduction of such technologies is not without challenges. In the past, Uber has stopped its own technology developments in the area of autonomous driving after a fatal accident. Nevertheless, Uber remains optimistic and plans to offer a driverless taxi service in a major American city by the end of 2026 in collaboration with Waymo.

There is great interest in the technology and the stock market has reacted positively to the announcements. Nvidia saw its share price rise on New York's Wall Street following the announcement of these strategic partnerships. The coming years in the mobility industry promise exciting innovations and changes in everyday consumer life.

The transport transition seems to be in full swing - we can only hope that the implementation of the plans goes smoothly and that we will soon be gliding through the streets of our cities in the new, smart robotaxis.
