Braunschweig's new bakery attraction: Kretzschmar awakens tradition!

There has been an exciting new development in the bakery landscape in Braunschweig since summer 2023. The traditional Mechau bakery, which was run by Karl Mechau for over 130 years, has closed its doors. The 77-year-old entrepreneur went into well-deserved retirement, which meant the end of an era for many regular customers. But the loss is not final, because the Kretzschmar bakery has taken control.

The traditional Kretzschmar bakery, which is run by Stefan Kretzschmar in the sixth generation, took over two of the three Mechau branches. On July 5, 2023, the branch on Dürerstrasse celebrated its reopening, which featured a visual renovation. New lighting and comfortable seating now invite you to linger. Fortunately, some of the former bakery's popular products, such as the root bread and curry confectionery, are still available, which will make some people feel nostalgic.

A new range and positive feedback

The Kretzschmar range expands the range and brings a breath of fresh air into the bakery. In addition to the tried and tested classics, there is now also a delicious selection of our own products. These include portafilter coffee and homemade ice cream, with special ice cream flavors such as limoncello ice cream and vegan fruit ice cream providing some taste surprises. Stefan Kretzschmar is pleased with the positive start and the satisfied faces of his customers.

But Kretzschmar is planning even more: a second branch on Schunterstrasse is scheduled to open after the 2023 summer holidays. There is great anticipation because the bakery has already made a good name for itself in the cityscape.

Insolvencies and challenges in the industry

However, a look at the bakery industry as a whole also brings less positive news. In Laupheim, a traditional bakery that ran into difficulties during the corona pandemic and rising raw material and energy costs has filed for bankruptcy since April 2024. On October 1, 2024, it closed all branches and laid off employees. Despite an investment plan and initial increases in sales, the Mäschle bakery was unable to free itself from the crisis and was ultimately transferred to regular insolvency proceedings because losses were no longer bearable. However, there are a few glimmers of hope: the Ulm bakery Staib has expressed interest in taking over parts of the company, and discussions with the insolvency administrator are underway.

The challenges are great, but the gastronomy scene in northern Germany remains active and adaptable. While Kretzschmar brings a breath of fresh air with new ideas, many are hoping for a turnaround for the companies that are in crisis. A good hand in leadership and market development could be the key to a successful restart.

Aware of its traditional past, Braunschweig is optimistic about the future of bakery culture. Stay tuned and support local businesses wherever possible!
