A serious accident caused a tragedy on October 25, 2025 near Braunschweig on Federal Highway 4. A BMW, whose driver had recently evaded a police check, overturned and fell from a bridge into the Mittelland Canal. The incident occurred around 1:10 p.m. after several emergency calls were received by the police. Three occupants of the BMW were killed, while two people in the oncoming VW were seriously injured, including one person who had to be flown to hospital in a rescue helicopter. PZ News reported that due to a risky overtaking maneuver in which the speed was significantly excessive, the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with another car.
The entire situation is dramatic: The BMW overtook several vehicles on the B4 and touched three of them before it finally crashed into the guardrail and began its descent into the canal. At the scene of the accident, the scene of destruction and chaos was unmistakable - a badly damaged black car with the roof mostly torn off. Rescue workers, including fire department divers from Gifhorn and the Wolfsburg professional fire department, were quickly deployed to recover the bodies of the deceased occupants. Federal Highway 4 was completely closed after the accident and shipping traffic on the Mittelland Canal also had to be temporarily stopped.
