A serious accident claimed three lives in the Mittelland Canal near Braunschweig last Saturday. The emergency services recovered the bodies of three male occupants of a vehicle that had previously made a dramatic journey. A driver who evaded a check on Autobahn 2 drove at excessive speed, overtook several cars and crashed into the guardrail in a risky maneuver. This had fatal consequences: the car crashed through the bridge railing and fell into the canal, while the driver and the two other passengers - a 34-year-old Serb and two Croatians aged 25 and 31 - died.
A 47-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man from Hamburg were sitting in the oncoming vehicle. The man suffered life-threatening injuries, while the woman is seriously injured but out of danger. The police received several emergency calls during the incident, whereupon extensive rescue measures were initiated. Emergency services arrived with boats, divers and even a helicopter to secure the situation and treat the injured.
The course of the accident and investigations
Investigators believe the accident was caused by the driver's excessive speed. Due to his risky driving behavior, the driver hit several cars before crashing into the catastrophe. A special ship from Hanover was requested to retrieve the sunken car from the canal, which incidentally had a Munich license plate and was considered embezzled after it was rented out. The person who caused the accident not only lost three lives, but is now also facing proceedings for negligent homicide.
The police investigation is far from over. An expert report is required to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident. It also remains unclear whether an autopsy of the deceased will take place. The drivers of the other vehicles involved could become important witnesses for further investigations while the public prosecutor's office awaits the results of the investigation. The situation is tense and the pain of those left behind is palpable.
It remains to be seen how the relatives and the public will deal with the tragic incident. Thanks go to the emergency services for their quick and professional action in such a dramatic situation. Even if nothing can be done to change the tragedy of the accident, everyone involved hopes that such accidents can be avoided in the future.
