Cold times for Braunschweig: snow and slippery conditions before the Christmas market!
November has already surprised us in Braunschweig with frosty temperatures and winter won't stop in December either. However, with the upcoming Christmas market between November 26th and December 29th, the cold season also promises some challenges. Meteorologist Dominik Jung warns of frosty conditions and explains that maximum temperatures are expected to be reached next weekend. A snow and freezing rain front will move from west to east across Germany on Sunday afternoon, with a thin blanket of snow of 1 to 3 cm forecast in Braunschweig. Caution is advised, especially on Sundays: slippery roads and paths make driving and walking risky. A sensible tip for everyone on the road: drive slower and be more careful.
The cold temperatures in Braunschweig are not a coincidence. A deformed polar vortex is contributing to the current cold as cold polar air flows into the region. These meteorological phenomena arise because the polar vortex, normally a stable curtain of air, has changed shape due to disturbances in the stratosphere. Experts report that such disruptions only occur very sporadically. However, for the current cold wave in Germany there is no direct connection with this disturbed polar vortex, as Süddeutsche explains.
Snowfall and slippery conditions
Sleet and local snowfall are expected in Braunschweig on Wednesday, which could bring a layer of 1 to 4 cm. Drivers must be particularly careful on the A2 and A39 motorways and on city bridges, as freezing water can occur because the ground is not yet completely frozen. On Thursday night temperatures can even drop to minus four degrees. This is reminiscent of similar weather conditions that prevailed in this region 13 years ago.
Winter road conditions are not just limited to the city. Such conditions can also be expected in the Harz at the weekend, which is certainly good news for winter sports enthusiasts. However, the prospects of a shiny white Christmas market remain unclear. According to the seasonal climate forecast from the German Weather Service (DWD), there is an 86 percent chance of a normal to warmer winter from December to February. Nevertheless, wintry episodes with snow and frost are certainly possible, even if forecasts for a white Christmas remain uncertain.
Overall, the cold season presents both challenges and the opportunity to snuggle up comfortably amidst the lights and festive atmosphere at the Christmas markets. Be on your guard and enjoy the pre-Christmas season in Braunschweig!
