Lions say goodbye to Kalu and Schilling: a new beginning is approaching!

After the departure of Sananda Fru, Martin Kalu and Gavin Schilling are now also on the list of players leaving the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig. This news has sparked conversation in the basketball community, especially because of the two athletes' different backgrounds.

Martin Kalu, a 20-year-old native, grew up in Quakenbrück, where he received his basic basketball training at TSV Quakenbrück. He found his way into the youth basketball Bundesliga through the syndicate of TSV Quakenbrück and SC Rasta Vechta. He made his Bundesliga debut at the age of just 16, making him one of the youngest players ever to take the field for SC Rasta Vechta. After a shorter stay in Vechta and a move to Bayern Munich, where he made a total of six appearances in the 2023/24 Bundesliga season, Kalu was planned to be an integral part of the Lions before his loan ended. In the 2023/24 season he made 21 BBL appearances with an average playing time of just under ten minutes and delivered a strong performance with nine points and seven rebounds against ratiopharm Ulm. Basketball Lions reports that his journey now continues—Kalu is moving to the College of Charleston in the US state of South Carolina, where he expects new challenges.

Gavin Schilling also says goodbye

In contrast, Gavin Schilling, who joined the Lions after a year out due to injury, was a different type of player. He also had to find his place in the team again before a concussion slowed him down in training. He played a total of 23 BBL games and averaged 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds. Managing director Nils Mittmann expressed his gratitude for the commitment of both players and wishes them all the best for their future endeavors.

Youth work in basketball is very important in Germany. The German Basketball Association has created new infographics to promote young competitive sports, which show bases and the path of young players. This transparent data is of great benefit to both coaches and athletes. The development of talents like Martin Kalu receives support from such programs, so that players are prepared for competitive sports levels at an early stage.

The basketball scene in Braunschweig will certainly be watching closely over the next few weeks and months to see how these two departures will affect the team and which new talents the Lions might be targeting to fill the gaps left by Kalu and Schilling.
