Hagenmarkt mega construction site: Braunschweig is becoming a green hotspot!

What is happening in Braunschweig? An exciting construction site in the heart of the city is coming up! On August 11, 2025, Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum officially broke ground for the redesign of the Hagenmarkt. This project aims to create an inviting city square that not only offers comfortable seating, but also offers space for a variety of events. Catering establishments can look forward to generous outdoor seating areas that will brighten up the future cityscape.

But that's just the beginning! The city is investing a total of around 7.35 million euros in this project. A significant part of the financing comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), where 1.12 million euros are already available for implementation. The city has also submitted an application to increase funding to 1.7 million euros because the costs of the redesign have increased. Regional Today reports on the plans, which include comprehensive desealing of the area and the replanting of over 80 trees and shrubs. These measures should not only serve to beautify, but also make an important contribution to climate protection.

Sustainability in focus

The Berlin landscape architecture office “capattistaubach” designed the design concept, which is clearly dedicated to climate-friendly conversion. As t-online has also highlighted, rainwater management will be a central element of the redesign. Wet times will be better used in the future by storing and reusing rainwater. This is an important step in preparing the city center for extreme weather events.

During the construction work, the Bohlweg will be closed to traffic from August 13, 2025, with a diversion via the city ring planned. Casparistrasse is also affected and will be closed to through traffic, but residents are exempt. To ensure that pedestrians are not slowed down, all properties remain within walking distance. An additional look at urban development funding shows that supporting sustainable urban development projects is a fundamental part of federal funding.

Construction time and other general conditions

The construction work is scheduled to last around 13 months, and a sense of timing for the diversion is also important, as the closure is to be temporarily lifted in the run-up to Christmas. The connection between Fallersleber Straße and Küchenstraße remains with one lane in each direction, so no excessive restrictions on vehicle traffic are to be expected here. Basically, the redesign of the Hagenmarkt will bring a good touch to the urban infrastructure and a valuable upgrade of the cityscape.

In conclusion, it can be said that this project will not only be an aesthetic gain for Braunschweig, but will also make a significant contribution to environmentally friendly urban development. Not only is the building modernized and renovated, but the needs of future generations are also taken into account. And who knows, maybe the new Hagenmarkt will soon become Braunschweigers' favorite place!
