New green for Braunschweig: 5 million euros for Hagenmarkt renovation!

A lot is happening at the Hagenmarkt in Braunschweig: the long-awaited renovation work will begin at the end of July 2025 and will last over 13 months. The team from the Berlin landscape architecture office will be responsible for the project, which has a total budget of 5.1 million euros capattistaubach take responsibility. Mayors and city councilors are enthusiastic about this climate-friendly redesign, which is intended to significantly improve the everyday space of citizens.

Around 80 new trees and shrubs will find their place in four spacious planting beds, which not only creates a beautiful cityscape but also helps to improve air quality. The design concepts rely on extensive unsealing, which is of central importance in times of climate change in order to be able to retain water in the long term and reduce urban heat islands. How braunschweig.de reported, 1.12 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) will flow into this project and strengthen the resilience of the city center.

Traffic and accessibility

Of course, there will also be some changes in the traffic area during the construction work: The road between the fountain area and St. Catherine's Church will be temporarily closed. But don't worry - the connection between Fallersleber Straße and Küchenstraße will remain with one lane in each direction. In order not to affect the busy Christmas market in the run-up to Christmas, the closure should be lifted in good time. Here, too, it is clear that the planners have a keen eye for the interests of the citizens.

The funding guidelines within the “Resilient City Centers” program aim to sustainably strengthen city centers. Braunschweig is one of the 15 cities that will benefit from a total of 61.5 million euros in this EU funding period. There are great opportunities for modernized urban development that meets the needs of society.

A dazzling picture of the future

The approaches to an ecological and sustainable cityscape are important not only in Braunschweig, but also in other cities. Increased land use and the conversion of nature into urban landscapes threaten resources for future generations. Therefore, sustainable city concepts are more in demand than ever. These integrate environmentally friendly practices and technologies to improve air quality and dramatically reduce CO2 emissions.

As an example of successful sustainable development, one can mention the “Walldorf 2050” initiative, which aims to transform Walldorf into an ecological city. Such initiatives clearly show how important it is to think long-term when planning and to adapt our cities to environmental requirements. It is precisely here that it becomes clear that cities are not only places of life, but can also make active contributions to combating global climate change, as the Greens in Walldorf emphasize here.

The Hagenmarkt project in Braunschweig shows what contemporary urban design can look like. It will be exciting to see what other ideas will be implemented in the coming years to make our city centers fit for the future.
