St. Nicholas Express sets off to Braunschweig: Christmas magic awaits!

On November 29, 2025, the historic St. Nicholas Express of Eisenbahnfreunde Treysa e.V. purred from Treysa to Braunschweig with the steam locomotive “Julchen” and locomotive 35 1097, which was built in 1959. The special train set off on Saturday morning around 8:30 a.m. and promised passengers an unforgettable experience on one of the most comfortable journeys of the season. To make the day perfect, the fare also included a delicious breakfast, and the club members provided snacks and drinks during the trip.

What awaited travelers in Braunschweig was nothing less than one of the oldest and most atmospheric Christmas markets in Germany. A festively illuminated market stretched across the castle square, the castle moat, the town hall forecourt and the cathedral square, which were highlighted with atmospheric lighting. The moat in particular, which is emphasized by a special lighting system, conjured up a fairytale atmosphere. And as befits such an occasion, the travelers in Braunschweig had a total of around six hours to enjoy the festivities and stroll through the colorful stalls.

Traveling in the region

The steam locomotive ran on a picturesque route from Treysa via Borken, Wabern, Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, Hann. Münden and Eichenberg to Braunschweig. The final travel times indicated that the train arrived in Braunschweig at 12:53 p.m. and then set off for home again at 6:38 p.m. The return to Treysa was scheduled for around 11:30 p.m.

The tickets, which were available directly on the train, had prices depending on the departure point. Those interested could look forward to the following price categories:

Departure point Faux leather large capacity Large space fabric upholstery Fabric padded compartment
Treysa 327€ 387€ 402€
Borken 297€ 357€ 372€
Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe 99€ 119€ 124€

There was also a group discount for larger groups of travelers, which reduced the price by 5% for groups of ten or more and 10% for groups of twenty or more. Anyone traveling with children could take a maximum of two adults and two children between the ages of 6 and 14 per family.

A special occasion

This year's event is part of a series of four special trips that Eisenbahnfreunde Treysa e.V. is undertaking to various Christmas markets. In addition to Braunschweig, trips to Fulda, Aschaffenburg and Wetzlar are also planned. These trips are a wonderful way to celebrate the run-up to Christmas while enjoying the beauty of the region. The Braunschweig Christmas market, which has a tradition going back over 500 years, attracted guests from Treysa with old stalls and all sorts of festive delicacies.

We can only hope that the upcoming trips will be equally appreciated in this sense and that the Advent spirit will remain very popular with travelers.
