Postal chaos in Braunschweig: Strike causes delivery delays for months!

Deutsche Post customers in Braunschweig are currently experiencing a phase of patience because mail delivery is not running smoothly. Various residents in the city, including Nadine B. from the city center, have reported that she has been waiting for her mail for over a week. Apparently, residents of the north and west of the city are also struggling with similar difficulties. A Facebook user mentioned that only one of two announced letters arrived, and that too after a considerable delay. When asked about the reasons for these delays, Post spokesman Jens-Uwe Hogardt blames all the stress on organizational changes, even though he emphasizes that there are no general problems in Braunschweig and that Deutsche Post is “very well positioned”. Although this refers to the number of employees, the impact on delivery seems to remain unclear.

But the chaos at the post office has another dimension. How T Online reports, the ver.di union is planning warning strikes that will also affect Braunschweig. These will be announced for Thursday and will add to the current situation as they could lead to even longer waiting times for letters. In Lower Saxony and Bremen in particular, letter recipients should be prepared for additional delays.

The demands of the union

The warning strikes are not a spontaneous action, but a response to the ongoing collective negotiations, which have so far been inadequate. Ver.di chairman Andrea Kocsis sharply criticizes the negotiations so far and is demanding a seven percent increase in pay and three additional days of vacation for employees. According to Kocsis, these measures are necessary to relieve the burden on employees who are struggling with increasing workloads and more expensive everyday lives.

  • 7% Entgeltplus für ca. 170.000 Tarifbeschäftigte
  • 3 zusätzliche Urlaubstage für alle Beschäftigten
  • 4 zusätzliche Urlaubstage für ver.di-Mitglieder

A failed entry into negotiations could have disastrous consequences. Similar warning strikes in the past have led to massive delays in the delivery of millions of letters and hundreds of thousands of parcels. Over 40 million letters are transported by Deutsche Post on a normal working day, and any interruption in this chain quickly becomes noticeable daily news determines.

The next decisive round of negotiations between Deutsche Post and the unions is planned for February 12 and 13, 2025. Deutsche Post has announced that it will submit an offer, but whether this will meet the demands remains to be seen.

In any case, the citizens of Braunschweig hope that the situation will ease soon and that the mail will arrive on time again - after all, not only letters, but also good neighbors are often dependent on each other.
