Quantum technology up close: Discover the PTB in Braunschweig!

On September 13, 2025, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig opened its doors to interested visitors. On a day full of exciting insights into the world of science, guests were able to visit more than 40 laboratories and find out about the latest developments in atomic clocks, climate research and quantum technologies. Loud NDR PTB is not only known for providing the official time for Germany, but also plays a central role in research for precise measurement and environmental protection.

A special highlight was the opportunity to view the impressive atomic clocks in the time laboratory. Not only are these precise timepieces technically fascinating, they could also bring about a change in navigation and aviation. There was also an exciting mix of science, entertainment and education in the lecture hall, with a science slam and the film “The Last Artifact”, which sheds light on the history of the original kilogram.

Research and new technologies

The variety of topics on this day was broad and ranged from automobility and energy to health and quantum technology. Insights into the fascinating world of quantum technology were provided by PTB researchers, who showed what light measurement with ions and how quantum computers work in practice. PTB There is also a hands-on station where guests could try out the transmission of quantum signals themselves. The highlight was the quantum escape room, in which participants had to repair a broken atomic clock in 15 minutes.

Quantum technologies are based on the mysterious principles of quantum mechanics, which are familiar to many from everyday stories, such as the famous Schrödinger's cat. These principles are not only theoretically interesting, but also lead to practical applications that can revolutionize our everyday lives. As part of the research work, quantum computers are being developed that can not only solve computationally intensive tasks faster than classic computers, but also ensure secure data transmissions - a technology that is increasingly in demand in communications technology, such as this BMFTR reported.

Sustainability and mobility

In times of climate change and environmental protection, the topic of sustainability was also central to the event. For example, the PTB promotes the connection between research work and environmentally friendly mobility. Traveling to PTB was therefore recommended using a shuttle bus service every quarter of an hour, and traveling by bike or on foot was also highlighted as an environmentally friendly option. Visitors can explore the surroundings in style and at the same time make a contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions.

The open day was not only an opportunity to experience exciting scientific findings first hand, but also a step in a future-oriented direction in which science and sustainability go hand in hand. This day will certainly be remembered fondly by all visitors, and the PTB has once again shown that it is a place for innovation and progress.
