Shock in Braunschweig: Train rams car - driver seriously injured!
Bahnübergang Altmarkstraße, 38176 Braunschweig, Deutschland - on June 16, 2025, at around 1:15 p.m., a serious traffic accident occurred in Braunschweig, more precisely at the unhappy level crossing Altmarkstrasse in Bienrode. A car collided with a train from Erixx GmbH that was on the way to Gifhorn. The driver of the car, 27 years old, was hit on the driver's side and thrown by the impact against a light signal and a gear shed. Due to the accident, she contracted slight injuries and was initially locked in the vehicle. To help her, the roof of the car was separated before it could be transported to a nearby hospital for examination. The train journey only came to a standstill about 100 meters after the impact, and luckily all around 50 passengers and a dog remained intact.
The immediately alarmed emergency services, including the fire brigade, police and emergency managers from Deutsche Bahn and Erixx GmbH, ensured quick and comprehensive care for those affected. The passengers of the train were cared for by the Bienrode local fire brigade and the emergency pastoral care directly at the scene of the accident. Then they were able to continue their trip with a replacement bus. During the operational measures, the Altmarkstrasse and the railway line were closed until the scene of the accident was completely cleared. This represents a recurring problem in the region, since security at ungr a again and again gets into the discussion.
safety concerns of level crossings
The incident in Bienrode directs the focus on the security situation at level crossings. According to a current study, there are over 13,600 level crossings in Germany, of which a high proportion is not technically secured. Many of the unrestricted intersections are only covered by visual controls and acoustic warning signals. While over 70% of the level crossings of Deutsche Bahn AG are technically secured, there is a considerable risk in unsecured transitions, especially if road users ignore or overlook the traffic lights. Call barriers are used at around 480 weakly frequented transitions, which in these cases should offer additional security.
In a similar incident that already occurred on May 18, 2025, another car was recorded by an Erixx train-the traffic light was also red and the driver had not paid attention. This example shows that repetitions of tragic events are not excluded, which again trudges the discussion about security at ungrumled level crossings. The number of accidents at the same height of the same height has decreased, but many accidents are still due to the misconduct of drivers.
The incident in Bienrode is an alarming sign that safety at level crossings must be continuously monitored and improved in order to minimize the risk of all road users. Initiatives to secure level crossings require close cooperation between Deutsche Bahn, the federal government and the local road construction load agents.
In view of the growing number of passengers and the importance of a safe infrastructure, it is becoming increasingly important that everyone involved proves a good knack when dealing with these sensitive traffic situations. The goal must be to prevent terrible accidents such as those in Bienrode and thus further increase safety in rail traffic. In the meantime, a look at the events of June 16, 2025 in Braunschweig shows that despite all the technical precautions, human failure comes into play again and again. Therefore, the task of clarification and sensitization for the dangers of level crossings remains a constant challenge that should all take seriously.
