Complete closure at an important intersection in Braunschweig: This is how it continues!

In Braunschweig the traffic signs say “construction site”! Theodor-Heuss-Strasse has been undergoing major renovations since the beginning of May, and now drivers have to prepare for further restrictions. The second construction phase is currently underway between Frankfurter Straße and Eisenbütteler Straße, which according to regionalheute.de should be completed by July 2nd. The third phase started on July 3rd.

A complete closure of the intersection between Theodor-Heuss-Straße and Frankfurter Straße is imminent, as the city of Braunschweig plans to adjust the construction process. The lockdown could come into effect as early as Monday, July 21st. During this time, a new drinking water pipe will be integrated into the existing network and the roadway will be renovated.

Diversions and access

The Gartenstadt motorway exit heading north will be particularly affected, as it will be completely closed. Road users should therefore prepare for a diversion via the Weststadt motorway exit as well as Münchenstrasse and Cyriaksring. In the southbound direction, however, the exit remains open, which means that vehicles can be routed via Alte Frankfurter Straße.

Residents of house numbers 218 to 224 and customers of house numbers 225 and 226 will only have access from the direction of Alte Frankfurter Straße during the construction period. Road users who want to go to the Otto-von-Guericke-Straße commercial area also have to take the detour via Frankfurter Straße and Fabrikstraße. Pedestrians and cyclists are still allowed to cross the construction site passages, which at least ensures the mobility of non-motorized road users.

Long-term construction projects

However, the construction sites in Braunschweig are not limited to Theodor-Heuss-Straße. Traffic will be affected in the city from the A391 to the town exit and increased traffic volumes are expected.

As part of these infrastructure measures, the city of Braunschweig is investing an impressive 103 million euros in construction and renewal projects for roads, bridges and cables in 2023. The investments are spread across numerous projects, with the repair of roads and bridges and the expansion of the supply infrastructure being given high priority (braunschweiger-zeitung.de).

Although the construction work causes some nerve-wracking in traffic, it is essential for improving the infrastructure in Braunschweig in the long term. With a good hand, those responsible can hope to carry out the construction work quickly and smoothly.
