Be careful, Braunschweig! Oak processionary moth threatens our summer!

Summer is approaching and the city of Braunschweig is showing off its bright colors. Spring fever brings many people outside into nature. But be careful! The oak processionary moth (Thaumetopoea processionea) can also become a problem at this time of year. These caterpillars are active from May to late July or early August and are particularly comfortable on oak trees. From the third larval stage onwards, they develop poisonous stinging hairs that can cause severe allergic reactions on contact.

Itchy skin rashes, redness and breathing difficulties such as a sore throat and cough are among the possible symptoms caused by the fine hairs. They can even cause asthma attacks, especially in allergy sufferers. It is therefore advisable to avoid affected areas and exercise particular caution, as news38.de reports.

Be careful when spending time outdoors

The city of Braunschweig has taken steps to protect the population. Caterpillar nests in sensitive areas such as schools, daycare centers and hospitals are removed within 24 hours. In residential areas this happens within 48 hours. In the first half of May, nematodes are also used to biologically combat the oak processionary moth without endangering people. Signs of infestation should be taken seriously and cordoned off areas should never be entered.

If you suspect oak processionary moths, citizens can contact the city on 0531/470-1 or 0531/115 or send an email to buergertelefon@braunschweig.de. However, it should be noted that only infected oak trees are reported. All other trees are not affected.

An increasing danger

The problem of the oak processionary moth is increasing, as netdoktor.de explains. Rising temperatures and a lack of night frosts encourage the occurrence of these pests. Children playing, walkers in forests and residents in areas with oak trees are particularly at risk.

The fine stinging hairs break off easily and can be spread over long distances by the wind. Direct contact with the caterpillars or nests is therefore not necessary to endanger yourself. Risk groups should be particularly careful when spending time in nature or using oak firewood.

Symptoms and treatment

Allergic reactions vary greatly. While some sufferers only experience mild symptoms, others may experience more severe symptoms that can even result in allergic shock. In the event of severe reactions, a visit to the doctor is essential. Antihistamines and cortisone can help with treatment. Anyone suffering from a history of reactions should definitely take all precautionary measures and avoid affected areas, advises gesundpedia.de.

As a preventative measure, it is advisable to wear long clothing and to find out about the current situation in the surrounding forests before spending time outdoors. In the event of a severe allergic reaction, first aid measures should be taken and an emergency doctor should be called to stabilize the circulation.

This much is certain: the oak processionary moth is a serious creature in the warm season. So enjoy the summer, but please take good care of yourself and those around you!
