Alcohol and its dark side: A look at French culture

A stirring documentary that explores the complex effects of alcohol consumption covers both the euphoric and darker facets of the subject. francetvpro.fr shows that alcohol is deeply rooted in the French way of life and can both strengthen social bonds and lead to separation. A group of protagonists - including Lou, Charlotte, Baptiste and Marie - share their personal stories from their first experience with alcohol to painful moments of addiction.

The film addresses in a humorous but also serious way the risks and illnesses associated with consumption, as well as the depressing reality of domestic violence that often occurs in such a context. It turns out that raising awareness and changing the relationship to alcohol in society are necessary in order to meet these challenges.

Insights through surveys

In order to better understand the current drinking habits of the French, a new survey by Ifop is used. This is a critical aspect, especially in view of the warning signs associated with alcohol abuse. A survey on the occasion of the International Day to Combat Violence Against Women on November 25th revealed that an alarming 14% of women surveyed had experienced psychological, physical or sexual violence in a relationship in the past year. During the 2020 lockdown it was just 9%, highlighting the worrying effects of isolation.

The detailed results show that 11% of women suffered abusive comments while 5% experienced physical violence. What is also worrying is that 12% of men do not see even forcing a sexual act as violence. ifop.com highlights that over 90% of women support the establishment of a specialized court for domestic violence cases and an urgent need for action in the legal and police institutions.

An urgent appeal

The discussion will be initiated by the planned debate section “Alcoholism: how to win the fight?”, which will be presented by Carole Gaessler. Prominent voices such as Noémie Lenoir and Pr. Amine Benyamina will take part in this exchange. This discussion could be crucial in addressing and understanding the challenges associated with alcohol consumption and its consequences.

In view of this problem outline, it becomes clear how closely the topics of alcohol, domestic violence and society are intertwined and how important a critical examination is. The film addresses this discussion and thus contributes to a changed perception - both in a personal and social context.

These issues are not only relevant in France, but also relevant here. They invite you to think about your own experiences and social norms.
