Festival summer in Celle: Meret Becker & Maxjoseph enchant the Stechbahn!
On Friday, June 27, 2025, a very special event will take place in Celle: the “Festival on the Square”. From 5:00 p.m., the Stechbahn becomes the stage for an exciting program that highlights the connection between science and art. The focus is on texts from Daniel Kehlmann's celebrated novel "Measuring the World", which is about the scientist Alexander von Humboldt, who explored the earth in the 18th century. As Celler Presse reports, the actress Meret Becker, known from “Babylon Berlin” and Berliner Tatort, will take over the reading.
The evening promises not only captivating lyrics, but also musical highlights. The Ensemble Maxjoseph will perform a mixture of chamber music, folk music, jazz and classical music. The band, which came together at the Munich University of Music, uses instruments such as the tuba, guitar, violin and the Styrian harmonica. Your selection includes pieces from the albums “Tabula Rasa” and “Nau” – a musical journey of a special kind that will certainly delight the audience. The event is supported by the Lower Saxony Sparkasse Foundation and the VGH Foundation, which honor the occasion for the event, the 25th birthday of the VGH Foundation and the 275th anniversary of VGH Insurance.
A free entry that opens hearts
The best thing about this event? Admission is free and no registration is required. So anyone who is interested in the exciting combination of literature and music can simply stop by and enjoy the evening. So you can sit down comfortably and experience the fascinating stories and sounds under the open sky. The event is also supported by the city of Celle, the VGH Celle regional directorate and the Sparkasse Celle-Gifhorn-Wolfsburg.
But what makes Humboldt and his work so special? As Tagesspiegel describes, Humboldt was not only a productive scientist, but also a traveler whose expeditionary spirit took him over 15,000 kilometers. His explorations and the large number of letters he wrote show that he was a tireless researcher. Kehlmann's book, which is still very popular 13 years after its first publication, impressively expresses this facet of Humboldt.
Becker, who has already received various awards for her acting achievements, will perform a homage to Humboldt and his living legacy on stage with the Ensemble Maxjoseph. The reading and the music promise to take the audience on a journey through space and time, all on an atmospheric summer day in Celle.
An event not to be missed – for both literature and music lovers. Further information can be found on the official website of the festival at festival-aufmplatz.de.
