Severe thunderstorm warning: Danger to life in Lower Saxony overnight!

A strong thunderstorm raged across parts of Lower Saxony during the night from Saturday to Sunday. The German Weather Service (DWD) issued an official severe weather warning late on Saturday evening, which was in force from 11:36 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Warning level 2 applied, which is also referred to as “striking weather”.

The southwestern part of Lower Saxony was particularly affected. Severe thunderstorms developed locally, with gusts of up to 65 km/h and heavy rain of between 15 and 25 liters per square meter. There were also reports of small-grain hail. The authorities also warned of significant dangers: lightning strikes could pose an acute threat to life, as could falling branches and flying objects. The roads were flooded in many places, making driving at night a real challenge. Aquaplaning and poor visibility were discouraged.

Precautions and Damages

The DWD advised the population to stay indoors during the storm, to secure tents and mobile structures and to avoid endangered areas. While the weather situation calmed down in the early hours of the morning, there were still some smaller operations for the fire brigade in the Celle district. They took care of removing fallen branches and securing several sections of the road.

The weather situation has once again demonstrated how quickly thunderstorm fronts can develop, especially on warm early summer days. In the coming days it is advisable to follow the current weather warnings closely. The WetterOnline platform not only offers severe weather warnings for Lower Saxony, but also information about possible thunderstorms, rain, storms and slippery conditions, which helps to prepare for a wide range of dangers such as lightning strikes and floods.

Storm warnings at a glance

The weather warnings are divided into different levels depending on the severity of the storm. Here are the four warning levels:
