Police riders protect the magnificent heather blossoms in the Südheide!
Mounted police riders Imke Wiedenroth and Gemma Wisotzki from the Braunschweig Police Rider Squadron have been patrolling the heart of the beautiful Südheide since the beginning of August. Your goal? The preservation of the nature park during the impressive heather blossom, which promises special splendor this year. The two police riders will be on duty until September 4th and will ensure that the protected area regulations and navigation rules for the rivers are adhered to.
The two ladies, on horseback, are not only eyewitnesses to the blooming nature, but also important contacts for tourists who want to explore the wonderful heathland here. They answer questions and inform guests about the rules of nature conservation. Violations will be punished immediately on the spot Seeing news reported.
Untouched nature and diverse activities
The Südheide Nature Park is not just a place for a quiet walk, but a lively habitat for many rare and sensitive animal species such as the crane and the black stork. The rivers and streams are also home to species such as otters and freshwater pearl mussels. The boggy headwaters between the forests and heaths already show how varied the landscape is that needs to be protected. Over 90% of the park is designated as a landscape or nature reserve, highlighting the importance of the ecosystem, such as national-naturlandschaften.de determines.
The impressive protected landscape area “Südheide in the Celle district”, which with its around 40,000 hectares is the largest in Lower Saxony, offers countless hiking and cycling trails as well as a well-developed network of bridle paths. If you would like to experience the area from a different perspective, you can also take part in a carriage ride. Culinary delicacies await you in the heath towns, and old heath farms in towns such as Müden, Eversen, Oldendorf and Marwede offer an insight into the regional culture. The whole thing can be experienced through a wide range of leisure activities in the park.
A visit all year round
Now in summer, the heather blossoms are attracting numerous visitors, and special events such as the “Nature Week” from June 21st to July 2nd, 2025 also offer special experiences. Whether it’s “Over 7 bridges through the glacial valley of the Örtze” or the guided horse and carriage excursions – there’s everything for nature lovers here! The Südheide Nature Park also has a visitor and information center in Eschede train station, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and can be visited free of charge. Here you can get a lot of interesting information about the region.
Particularly noteworthy are the barrier-free hiking trails at Angelbecksteich and around Heidesee, which enable all visitors to enjoy the beauty of the park. Whether by car or train, the nature park can be reached quickly - it only takes 40 minutes from Hanover and just an hour from Hamburg. So nothing stands in the way of a relaxing day in the heather-flowering landscape!
