Orphans from Sumy: Three weeks of hope and joy in Celle!

Recently, 25 orphans returned from the Ukrainian twin city of Sumy after a three-week stay in Celle. This trip was organized by the city under the direction of Mayor Jörg Nigge and offered the young people the opportunity to escape the oppressive everyday life in their war-torn homeland for a short time. The return journey took 49 hours, but the group arrived home safely.

The young people's stay began on July 2nd and was initially characterized by uncertainty and fear. But these feelings quickly turned into joy and curiosity. In the first week the group expected a varied program. This included guided tours, an invitation to the Old Town Hall with the Ukrainian Consul General Iryna Tybinka, a visit to the fire department, the youth circus and finally a visit to the cinema in Hanover.

Relaxation and adventure

The second week included a trip to Berlin and Potsdam, while the third week included exploring attractions in Hamburg, Serengeti Park, Heide Park and Hexentanzplatz. The group celebrated their farewell to Celle with a soccer game in which they took part in a leisure league cup tournament. There the tournament ended with a draw on penalties.

However, the preparations for the trip were no picnic. Due to the ongoing Russian attacks on Sumy and the region, it was unclear until recently whether the group could cross the border safely. Nevertheless, we managed to overcome these hurdles and give the young people a break, which was urgently needed in difficult times.

High willingness to help in Celle

Celle is not only committed to this special trip. The willingness to help Ukrainian refugees remains high. A free flea market took place at the Paulus Family Center on May 21st, where refugee families were able to purchase necessary supplies such as clothing, toys and household items. This campaign was supported by a private initiative and CeBus GmbH & Co. KG, which also organized the bus transfer for the refugees.

The fleeing people, especially women, children and young people, find temporary protection in Germany. In order to better support them, the federal states and municipalities work closely together, as the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs emphasizes. There are numerous initiatives that aim to offer refugee children and young people stability and promote their integration. Among other things, programs were set up to support unaccompanied minor refugees and to provide assistance for pregnant women in emergencies.

Around 500 youth migration services are available to help young people between the ages of 12 and 27 arrive. Psychosocial support for traumatized refugees is also promoted so that the young people can find a new life situation.

The impressive journey of the orphans from Sumy to Celle not only illustrates the importance of solidarity and support for Ukrainian refugees, but also the great commitment of the city and its citizens during this challenging time. The stay not only gave the young people beautiful memories, but also gave them hope that they can take with them to their homeland.
