Large investment project: 15 million for a new school building in Delmenhorst!
There are exciting times ahead in Delmenhorst! With the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony that took place this week, the city took the first step towards expanding the elementary school on Beethovenstrasse. This has become necessary in order to comply with the new legal requirements. From the 2026/2027 school year, all first graders have a legal right to full-day care, and the city is required to create the appropriate facilities. Again Weser courier reports, Delmenhorst is investing around 15 million euros in this new building, which will cover an area of around 3,300 square meters.
What can the students expect? The renovation includes a larger sports hall, a cafeteria for all-day use and specialist rooms. These areas are not only intended to support school operations, but can also be used flexibly by external users, such as clubs outside of school hours. The compact design also ensures that the required heating energy can be provided by a heat pump - a real plus for climate protection, which also includes a photovoltaic system and green roof areas.
All-day care – an important topic
The legal right to full-day care, which will be gradually implemented from 2026, represents an important step in closing care gaps after the daycare period. The Federal Minister for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth has presented comprehensive plans in this regard. Overall, the entitlement to all-day care will be expanded to all four grade levels by August 2029. The goal is to improve the compatibility of family and work and to ensure equal opportunities in education.
Information events are held to prepare parents of future school children for the new situation. These are planned for the parents of children who will start school in 2026 on March 27th and April 2nd, 2025 at 7 p.m. in the market hall at Rathausplatz 2. Here parents can find all the information they need about what the all-day school offers and the registration processes. Registration is possible via the city of Delmenhorst's service portal, as the city of Delmenhorst states on its portal: Delmenhorst informed.
It is clear that the need for all-day activities for primary school children is not yet sufficiently met in many regions. According to a report by the German Institute for Economic Research, expanding all-day care could even increase mothers' employment - another reason why this step is so important in Delmenhorst.
Overall, the new primary school building on Beethovenstrasse not only meets future legal requirements, but also ensures that Delmenhorst provides the best possible education and care options for its young citizens. It remains to be hoped that the construction work around the existing school site will progress quickly and will not disrupt everyday school life too much.
