Pedelec driver injured in Delmenhorst: collision in oncoming traffic!

On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, an accident occurred in Delmenhorst around 2:30 p.m., who suffered a 62-year-old Pedelec driver. The man was traveling towards Ludwig-Kaufmann-Straße on the small key road when he got on oncoming traffic in a curve and collided with the vehicle of a 54-year-old driver from Ganderkesee. Fortunately, the driver was unharmed, while the pedelec driver fell during the collision and mild injuries. He was taken to an surrounding hospital with an ambulance.

The police account for the property damage to the woman's car with around 4,000 euros . The accident once again describes the challenges that cyclists, especially pedelec users, meet in road traffic. This type of bicycle is very popular, but also brings certain risks. Just in 2024 was a year in which an increasing number of cyclists were fatally crashed, especially older people over 65 years of age who are often on pedelecs.

dangers for pedelec drivers

According to the current statistical statistics of the Federal Statistical Office, 441 cyclists had a fatal accident in 2024, including 192 pedelec users . This corresponds to a worrying increase in accidents compared to previous years. Almost two thirds of these accidents resulted in other road users, often drivers. In the event of accidents in which cyclists are involved, they were blamed themselves in around half of the cases.

It is alarming that the proportion of pedelec used in accidents who are 65 or older is 68.8 %. This refers to a growing danger for older road users in road traffic and shows that further traffic safety measures are urgently necessary for this group.

sensitization in road traffic

Apart from the need to improve the infrastructure for cyclists, increased sensitization of drivers is also required. The case of the pedelec driver in Delmenhorst is a call to ensure more consideration and caution in road traffic. The Delmenhorst/Oldenburg-Land/Wesermarsch police inspection is available for concerns and information. Contact them on the phone number 04221-1559104 or by email to pressestelle@pi-del.polizei.niedersachsen.de .

The tragic accident on Tuesday could enter into the discussion about traffic safety and the dangers that Pedelec drivers are exposed to in road traffic. So that such incidents become less common, every road user should contribute to security in everyday life.
