Horrible accident on the A28: horse transporter overturns!
On Wednesday evening, December 3rd, 2025, a serious accident on Autobahn 28 in Hatten caused a stir. An incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. when a 64-year-old driver from Hungary lost control of his van and its trailer and both vehicles overturned on their left side. The van was traveling in the direction of Oldenburg when a tire broke, which ultimately led to this mishap. The vehicle came to a standstill in the right lane and the shoulder, as news.de reports.
An attentive first aider intervened immediately and was able to free the driver from the driver's cab. He was taken to the hospital for an examination, but was able to go home the same night. Fortunately, the driver was almost uninjured. However, the situation on site was tense because the transporter was carrying two horses, which were visibly frightened after tipping over. To help the animals, two veterinarians were called to the scene to administer sedatives and facilitate safe transfer to another trailer. Fortunately, both horses were transported away at around 10:30 p.m. without any visible injuries.
Deployment of the fire brigade and closures
The accident led to the highway being completely closed in both directions for hours. The fire department was on site with a large contingent of around 60 emergency services. The first rescue operation took place at 8:51 p.m. and the entire operation ended at 11:03 p.m. when the accident site was handed over to the police. Matthias Witthöft, press spokesman for the Oldenburg district fire department, praised the efforts of the dedicated first responder couple, who acted quickly in this emergency situation. Special closures affected the Oldenburg lane until midnight and the Bremen lane until 10:50 p.m.
The material damage is estimated at around 15,000 euros. While the cause of the accident has so far been linked to the van's defective tire, there have also been reports of a previous traffic accident that may have exacerbated the situation. A 35-year-old driver had to brake beforehand, which led to the accident in the medium term when a 45-year-old driver behind him drove up without braking.
Traffic situation in Germany
This incident joins the worrying statistics of traffic accidents in Germany. In 2024, around 2.5 million road traffic accidents occurred, with the number of personal injuries remaining stable. According to Statista, human factors such as inattention and recklessness continue to have a significant influence on the number of accidents. Even if the authorities take into account the goal of “Vision Zero” – no traffic deaths by 2050 – educating road users and improving infrastructure remain a crucial key to reducing the number of accidents.
