Woolworth move into the Jute Center: restart or further delay?
A lot is happening in retail in Delmenhorst. A new Woolworth branch is currently being planned in the Jute Center, which will have around 1,200 square meters of space. The original move-in was scheduled for the end of 2018, but what happened Weser courier reported, this date has already been postponed several times due to a lack of building and usage permits. Most recently, the goal was to open the branch at the end of 2024. Discussions for a new development plan are ongoing and Woolworth hopes to make progress soon.
But the jute center has even more to offer. With a total of 55,000 square meters of space and 800 parking spaces, it remains a central point for shopping enthusiasts in the region. The Saller Group, which owns the shopping center, has big plans and invested tens of millions in the development in 2011. After the demolition of old structures and the construction of new areas, well-known tenants such as Aldi, Kino Maxx, Cleverfit and various medical practices and restaurants were acquired. The E-Center opened in April 2024 and is currently looking for suitable tenants for a 285 square meter retail space that is still available.
New Woolworth in City Point
The upheaval in the city centers is noticeable, and Delmenhorst is no exception. The pandemic and digital commerce have upended retail, leaving local stores struggling with vacancies. There are clear trends: on the one hand, the construction of shopping centers such as shopping malls is booming, while on the other hand, many small shops are suffering from the pressure of online retail. The Urban planning colloquium is therefore dedicated to precisely these challenges and will discuss relevant topics in the future in order to give the city center a future.
The planned demolition of the former Hertie building on Lange Straße is scheduled to be completed by November 2023 and paves the way for a redesign of this central location. This also includes the demolition of the neighboring buildings at Lange Straße 119 to 121, which can improve the conditions for new tenants and possible uses.
Whether in the Jute Center or in the City Point – Delmenhorst has set out to redesign its shopping options and meet the demands of today. With new concepts and tenants, the city center could soon blossom again.
