30 years of Johannes a Lasco Library: A treasure in Emden is celebrating!
A few days ago the 30th anniversary of the Johannes a Lasco Library was celebrated in Emden. On Saturday afternoon, Culture and Science Minister Falko Mohrs (SPD) and numerous prominent guests met to honor this special anniversary. The library, which has played a significant role not only in the city but also in the field of Reformed Protestantism over its almost 500-year history, was reopened in 1995 and has since established itself as a valuable resource for research and education.
The Johannes a Lasco Library is the result of a long tradition that began in the 16th century. Once founded in 1559 as an archive and book collection for the Reformed community of Emden, it is now a special library focusing on the history and theology of Reformed Protestantism and the denominational history of the early modern period. With an impressive collection of around 160,000 titles, the library not only offers access to specialist literature, but also exhibits on the history of Reformed Protestantism. Particularly noteworthy are the unique holdings, including works by personalities such as Erasmus of Rotterdam and Johannes a Lasco himself.
A historic building with a modern twist
Located in the ruins of the Great Church, which was destroyed in 1943, the library combines historical architecture with modern elements of industrial construction. The hall, which is often used for cultural events and exhibitions, is considered one of the most beautiful museum event rooms in Northern Germany and can accommodate up to 400 visitors. Concerts and lectures take place here regularly, enriching the city's cultural life.
The library's reopening in 2010 after a three-year closure due to financial problems was only possible thanks to extensive financial support of 7 million euros, which was provided by, among others, the Evangelical Church in Germany. Over 2 million euros were raised for the renovation and modernization, underlining the importance of the library within the region. Sponsors such as the federal government, the EU and various foundations have made a significant contribution to the library being able to regain its central cultural and scientific status today.
The future of the library
Under the leadership of Kȩstutis Daugirdas as scientific director and Gerhard Plenter as commercial director, the Johannes a Lasco Library is now more than ever a sought-after research center and a popular event location. Its position as the most important library of its kind and its specialization in the history and theology of Reformed Protestantism make it an indispensable part of Northern Germany's cultural heritage.
The foundation is supervised by the Evangelical Reformed Church in Leer, which ensures that the library can continue to preserve the value of its collection in the future. A visit is worthwhile, not only for experts, but for everyone who is interested in the history and cultures of Emden and Reformed Protestantism.
