Drunk driver causes serious rear-end collision in Emden!

An alcoholic driver caused a rear-end collision in Emden on Saturday evening. The 46-year-old man, who was traveling on Fletumer Strasse, was stopped by the police with an alcohol level of 1.92 per mille. This not only leads to his driving license being revoked, but also to a ban on further driving. Fortunately, the 24-year-old driver of the other vehicle was uninjured. The exact damage has not yet been quantified, but the police assume that inattention was the cause of the accident. Such incidents shed light on the widespread problem of alcohol-related traffic accidents.

It is repeatedly pointed out how dangerous drinking and driving is. The current statistics show that a total of 37,172 alcohol-related traffic accidents were registered in Germany in 2023. These accidents claimed 198 lives and injured nearly 18,686 people, like that VPV reported. On average, almost 102 such accidents occurred every day!

Alcohol Deaths and Injuries: A Worrying Trend

Statistics of the Federal Statistical Office show that although the number of alcohol-related traffic accidents in Germany was reduced from 2019 to 2021, there was an increase in accidents and thus also in victims compared to 2019. What remains alarming is that in more than one in eight alcohol-related accidents, a person loses their life.

But how much alcohol is actually safe while driving? From 0.3 per mille, vision and the ability to react can be severely impaired. The legal limit is 0.5 per mille, although a zero per mille limit applies to young or inexperienced drivers. From 1.1 per mille you are classified as completely unfit to drive and there is a risk of significant criminal consequences, such as a medical-psychological examination.

A call for reflection

As a society, we need to realize that driving and alcohol do not belong together. The recent incident in Emden is another wake-up call to take the dangers of drunk driving seriously. The numbers are alarming and illustrate that many people are putting their own and others' lives at risk through irresponsible actions. It is up to each and every one of us not to compromise.
