Emden is investing 4.6 million euros in school and daycare renovations!
Things will be really busy in Emden this summer. The city has made it its mission to bring its schools and daycare centers into shape. In total, at least 4.6 million euros will flow into these renovation measures NWZonline reported. With 13 schools affected, including the adult education center and music school, this is quite a bit of work that is being tackled here during the school holidays!
The Emden municipal building management (GME) has big plans. The measures range from basic renovations to small repairs. Particularly eye-catching are the large projects, such as fire protection and the core renovation of the special school, which was opened in 1952. A large budget of 1.5 million euros is important here, with completion scheduled for July 2026.
Renovation work in detail
But what exactly is being done in schools and daycare centers? The list of measures is long and ranges from new toilet partitions in the Burgplatz daycare center to repairing the vestibule in the Transvaal daycare center. The Am Wall primary school, for example, has 110,000 euros available for the renovation of the toilet rooms, while at the Borssum high school the sports hall is being given impact protection and a side door for around 53,000 euros.
- Grundschule Grüner Weg: Brandschutz- und Kernsanierungen mit Gesamtkosten von 1,6 Millionen Euro.
- IGS: Instandsetzung des Pausengartens.
- Berufsbildende Schulen II: Sanierung der Obergeschosse.
- Johannes-Althusius-Gymnasium: Erneuerung der Regenwasserleitung.
In addition, there are numerous measures in the daycare centers. The Schwabenstraße daycare center is getting an extension with changing rooms and toilet rooms, while the Up Padd daycare center in Larrelt will have new play equipment in September/October. This diversity of work shows that the city cares about the well-being of its youngest citizens.
Investments for the future
But the city doesn't just have short-term plans. Total investments of around 80 million euros in the area of building management have been approved for the years 2025 and 2026. For this purpose, the GME's own capacities are also used, where teams of bricklayers, painters and carpenters are deployed to advance the projects.
Experts see the renovation of school properties as not only a necessary measure, but also a lucrative investment opportunity. According to a study by PwC School properties have the potential to be an interesting investment due to the high net returns and the ongoing need for renovation. However, the upcoming investment is a major challenge for many municipalities, which is why private sector partners are increasingly being sought.
Overall, it shows that Emden has a lot planned - and that's a good thing! Investments in schools and daycare centers benefit not only current but also future generations. A city with future-oriented plans can only win, even if the path to get there is challenging.
