Disappointment for VfB Lübeck: Again only a draw against St. Pauli II!

Even though the fans of VfB Lübeck had hoped for a win, the game against FC St. Pauli II on Tuesday evening ended in a 1-1 draw. In front of 2,387 spectators in the Lohmühle stadium, the supporters initially saw a ray of hope when Antonio Verinac put Lübeck in the lead in the 35th minute after a precise cross from captain Marvin Thiel. But the joy was short-lived, as Erik Ahlstrand was able to equalize shortly before half-time in the 44th minute - also with a header from a corner. After the game, coach Guerino Capretti was visibly frustrated by the repeated goals conceded from set pieces, which had already caused major headaches in previous games.

Capretti recalled recent games in which the team repeatedly had similar problems. There was the 2-2 draw against Emden and the bitter 2-7 defeat against Drochtersen, in which both goals conceded came from corners. The Lübeck team also had to admit defeat 2-0 in the city derby against Phönix Lübeck after another goal that resulted from a dead ball. “We have to defend more resolutely and take responsibility,” emphasized Capretti. The repeated failure at set pieces is a headache not only for him but also for the players.

Lack of chances in the second half

The second half showed that the Lübeck team were able to boost their offensive game, but there were still no clear chances to score. Verinac missed good opportunities twice, once in the 47th and then in the 49th minute. The effort of Colin Ulrich, who hit the post in the 90th minute and missed the possible winning goal, was particularly bitter. Despite their efforts, Lübeck was unable to reward their intensive work on the field with a victory. This season, VfB Lübeck is now in its sixth game without a win in the regional league.

The situation raises the question of what will happen next for the team. Capretti is calling on his team to finally convert the positive approaches into results, because with this mental attitude of avoiding defeats after set pieces, it will be more difficult to gain a foothold in the league. The disappointment hangs over the team - the next game will show whether the efforts on the pitch will soon pay off. As always in football – hope dies last!
