Major train cancellations between Emden and Leer: This is how you are affected!
Rail travelers in northern Germany have to prepare for some significant restrictions in train traffic. From tomorrow, October 27th, until November 15th, 2025, construction work will begin on the RE 15 route between Emden (outer harbor) and Leer/Lathen. These measures could result in train cancellations, pre-scheduled journeys and delays. Travelers are particularly affected in the evening hours.
In the first week of construction work, specifically on the evening of October 27th to 28th, outages between Emden and Papenburg are already expected. In addition, every second pair of trains between Emden and Leer will be canceled from October 30th to November 16th. There will also be cancellations between Emden and Lathen on the evening of November 14th and 15th.
Replacement bus services
To make travel planning easier, WestfalenBahn has set up a replacement bus service. These buses mainly run between Emden and Lathen, but also between Emden and Leer. Additional buses will be deployed during peak hours to meet increased demand. The timetables are available on the WestfalenBahn website, which makes timely planning possible.
The online portal “bahn.de aktuell” also provides comprehensive information for travelers. In addition to a disruption map that shows current train cancellations and route interruptions, there is also a train radar that shows the positions of the trains in real time. If you don't want to miss any delays, you can also receive push notifications on your cell phone. Further details are available on the website bahn.de currently to read.
Long-term construction site planning
The ongoing work is part of a larger initiative by Deutsche Bahn that aims to comprehensively modernize the rail network in Germany by 2036. These efforts involve not only short-term construction sites, but also long-term closures of important routes. For example, the commuter route between Hamburg and Berlin will be completely closed until the end of April 2026, which will extend travel time for travelers by around 45 minutes.
The list of planned construction sites and associated restrictions is long. There will be numerous other major construction sites in 2025, such as the Hamm – Hanover route, which will be affected until December 13, 2025. And the junctions in Berlin are not spared either: stops at Berlin Central Station will be eliminated from February to December 2025. For commuters and travelers throughout Germany, it is advisable to regularly keep up with the latest traffic reports in order not to fall into the trap of unexpected delays or cancellations.
