Motor freight ship causes accident on the Main – woman injured!

On Saturday afternoon, an accident on the Main near Bürgstadt caused a stir. At 3:25 p.m. a dangerous situation arose when a motor freight vessel generated significant waves, which caused an adjacent inflatable boat carrying four people to capsize. Fortunately, all occupants of the dinghy were uninjured and were rescued in time. A recreational boat that was also involved in the incident was violently moved, causing a 51-year-old woman to fall and sustain minor injuries. The Aschaffenburg water police immediately began an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of this incident. The estimated property damage is in the low four-digit range. Witnesses who observed what happened are asked to contact the water police. [Tixio] reports that similar incidents in the past have repeatedly led to discussions about safety on the waters.

But how do such accidents happen on our waters? This is not always easy to answer. The Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU) deals with exactly such cases. It records and investigates all types of maritime accidents worldwide that have to do with German ships, be it on inland waters or in the exclusive economic zone. Their goal is to determine the exact circumstances and causes in order to prevent future accidents and protect lives. This is not about determining guilt or liability, but rather about taking preventative measures. You can find more information about the work of the BSU on its website [BSU].

Our waterways: safety in focus

The incidents on our rivers and lakes are not only exciting, but also alarming. The risk of accidents increases, especially in the warm months when there are many day trippers. In the region around Bürgstadt, through which the Main flows, careless maneuvers by boats or ship traffic are not uncommon. The water police are regularly on duty to ensure safety on the water.

In addition, many recreational captains and boat rental companies have a motivating approach to the issue of safety in order to prevent accidents. It is recommended to always keep a watchful eye and offer help if you have the opportunity. The Water Police urge all boaters and water sports enthusiasts to behave responsibly and reminds that simple precautionary measures can often help significantly. Because, as I said, better safe than sorry, especially on the water!
