Sinterklaas inspires Emden: An Advent weekend full of highlights!

There was a lot going on in Emden on the second weekend of Advent. Hundreds of visitors flocked to the city to experience the traditional visit of Sinterklaas. The big highlight took place on Saturday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. when Sinterklaas docked at the Delft steps and not at the harbor gate as usual. His arrival was greeted by many happy faces, especially children, who could hardly take their eyes off the colorful pies and lots of sweets.

Sinterklaas and his companions took an impressive tour of the city center. On a tour lasting about three quarters of an hour, he visited Brückstrasse and the Engelkemarkt, where he generously distributed sweets. The festive mood was further fueled by the steaming mini train from the Emder Minibahner at the “Winter Steam Market” on Bahnhofsplatz.

Advent campaigns and Christmas markets

But Emden had even more to offer! Various Christmas markets also took place in the area. The Lüttje Greetmer Christmas market opened its doors on its first weekend in Greetsiel and in Hinte you could stroll on the market square near the mill in a pre-Christmas atmosphere. The culinary and craft offerings were diverse and ranged from homemade pottery to delicious Glögg and grilled sausage.

There was something to discover in the region for every age group. A Christmas market was organized in Edewecht with an exciting children's program, a Lego exhibition and a reading tent. In Friedrichsfehn, little visitors were able to take part in exciting craft activities around the campfire, while in Loy, hobby artists offered their homemade works and delicious culinary stands.

Thanks to the many offerings and the festive atmosphere, it became clear once again how important such traditions are for the people in the region.
