In Gifhorn, the situation at the Aldi stores is getting dramatically worse. On May 3, 2024, there was a devastating fire in a supermarket on Adam-Riese-Straße, which broke out due to a technical defect. The significant damage is estimated at around two million euros. The building, which was constructed using lightweight construction, was almost completely destroyed; the roof collapsed while the fire was being extinguished. Over 100 firefighters worked to fight the flames and prevented them from spreading to neighboring buildings. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed as there was a risk of significant smoke. Schools and a kindergarten remained closed that day. Investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing after the fire brigade gained control of the flames with repeated use of extinguishing foam and an excavator. The fire brigade was alerted at around 5:30 a.m. and was able to complete the extinguishing work by midday, but the fire site remained confiscated until further investigations.
But that's not the only bad news for Aldi customers in Gifhorn: In June 2023, another Aldi store at Hamburger Straße 71 in Gifhorn-Gamsen burned down due to arson. A temporary tent has now been erected to keep sales going. However, Aldi Nord emphasizes that this situation should not last. Construction work on a new Aldi store has already begun. The new market will be built on a spacious area with a sales area of 800 square meters according to a modern branch concept and will be designed using a wooden frame construction. The wooden components are manufactured in the factory, which should enable rapid implementation.
New Aldi in prospect
The reopening of the market in Gamsen is planned for mid-2026, assuming everything goes according to plan. Intensive planning is also already underway for Adam-Riese-Straße to enable the Aldi location to return quickly. However, there is currently no concrete information about this. Those responsible are in close coordination with the city of Gifhorn to find the best possible solutions for customers and the neighborhood.
It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and when the people of Gifhorn can fully count on their Aldi stores again. In the meantime, continued tent sales may be a stopgap measure that many customers are fiercely defending and finding “surprisingly enjoyable,” despite the circumstances. The challenges that the last few months have brought with them make it more than clear: There is something going on in Gifhorn, and the mixture of despair and hope cannot be overlooked.
