Unemployment rate in Göttingen is rising: Alarming figures in August!

The economic situation in southern Lower Saxony appears to be rather subdued in August 2025. How HNA reported that the unemployment rate in the region rose by 0.2 percent to 6.8 percent. This number corresponds to the previous year's figure and sheds light on the challenges that employees and employers are currently facing.

In the Göttingen agency district, 16,714 people were registered as unemployed in August, which represents an increase of 488 people and therefore an increase of 3.0 percent compared to the previous month. Compared to the same month last year, the figures also show an increase, albeit more moderately: 99 more unemployed people, which corresponds to an increase of 0.6 percent. Particularly striking is youth unemployment, which rose by 375 people (22.4 percent) to 2,050. This is typically a phenomenon in the summer months.

Background of unemployment

The reasons for the increase are varied. Klaudia Silbermann, head of the Göttingen Employment Agency, highlights the reluctance of companies to fill new or replacement positions. This could indicate the difficulties in filling vacancies with suitable candidates. According to statistics, 808 more people are registered for unemployment insurance, which corresponds to a significant increase of 16.3 percent compared to the same month last year. Compared to July, the number has also increased by 92 people (plus 1.6 percent).

The development of vacancies is also worrying. A total of 751 job vacancies were reported in August, which corresponds to a decrease of 329 positions (minus 30.5 percent) compared to July and 76 positions (minus 9.2 percent) compared to the same month last year. The number of vacancies has fallen to 3,821, i.e. 170 fewer than in July (minus 4.3 percent) and 1,171 fewer than a year ago (minus 23.5 percent).
