Femicide in Kalefeld: Deadly incident shocks the region!

Tragic news reaches us from Kalefeld in the Northeim district. A homicide uncovered by a voicemail hints at a shocking femicide. The perpetrator was the partner of the woman who was killed, who lost his life shortly afterwards in a traffic accident. The Göttingen public prosecutor's office has concluded the proceedings because the person responsible can no longer be prosecuted. A memorial event is being planned to commemorate the victims. This is just one example of the huge problem that is emerging in our society, because femicide is not simply an isolated case; it is a structural problem that has far-reaching social impacts.

Femicide refers to the killing of women and girls because of their gender and represents the extreme peak of gender-based violence. The term itself not only addresses the acts, but also highlights the patriarchal structures that promote such violence. According to estimates, there were a total of 155 femicides in Germany in 2023. That's a woman killed almost every other day - a worrying statistic that leads to an average case per year in Göttingen. It is usually partners or ex-partners who are responsible for such acts. According to experts, the number of unreported cases of violence against women is significantly higher than the cases recorded.

The gaps in the implementation of the Istanbul Convention

Germany ratified the Istanbul Convention in 2017 to consistently combat gender-based and domestic violence. Nevertheless, current surveys in Göttingen show that there are significant gaps in implementation that urgently need to be closed. The coordinators of the Istanbul Convention in Göttingen, Mirja Ramola and Anna Maierl, are therefore calling for an action plan that aims to combat gender-specific violence and provides for more stable financing models for support systems for women and children affected by violence. It is emphasized that equality for all genders and overcoming unequal power relations must be a top priority.

The necessary measures also include mandatory training content on gender-specific violence for relevant professional groups as well as targeted support offers in rural areas. The demand for low-threshold access to information and help is growing, and social awareness of the problem must be promoted in order to help women and children affected by violence.
