Göttingen: Provisional rescue of the heat supply on Groner Landstrasse!

Today, the city of Göttingen announced a short-term solution to avoid the impending cessation of heat supply at Groner Landstrasse 9. Thanks to a clever move by the city administration, the heat supply will initially be secured until September 29, 2025. The reasons for this critical situation were, above all, high demands from Stadtwerke Göttingen AG against the homeowners' administration (WEG administration), which could have led to a cessation of supply in the coming days. How goettingen.de reported, the city administration has deferred its claims regarding property tax, garbage and sewer usage fees until November 2025.

This deferral is linked to the condition that the amounts previously paid by the WEG administration flow directly into the heat supply of the affected building. Mayor Petra Broistedt expressed her relief that the recruitment had been successfully prevented, but warned that this regulation was only a temporary solution. She also criticized the fact that financial interests often seem to be placed above social concerns. Broistedt also points out that the city's options for dealing with such precarious housing situations are limited.

Legal changes required

The mayor is therefore calling for legal changes that clearly place responsibility for problematic properties on the owners. In order to support regulatory measures such as those against the property owner management, the city of Göttingen has sent a list of demands to the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Olaf Lies. This initiative shows that the city is not only reacting, but also proactively seeking solutions to secure housing and protect social aspects.

Sustainable heat planning in focus

In parallel to the discussion about heat supply in Groner Landstrasse, work is also underway in Göttingen on a long-term concept for heat supply. Municipal heat planning, as on sustainability.goettingen.de presented provides a comprehensive simulation of the development of the heating market up to 2040. Various scenarios were played out to find out how Göttingen can make its heat supply more environmentally friendly.

The selected target scenario aims for a realistic decarbonization of the heating market. The switch to a predominantly electrical heat supply, supported by heat pumps and heating networks, is a central part of this planning. The goal is an electricity share of the final energy requirement of 40% and a significant reduction in heat requirements through building renovations. This could make annual heat savings of around 337 GWh possible by 2040.

This initiative shows that Göttingen is not only tackling short-term challenges, but is also setting the course for a sustainable energy future. The city administration is thus responding to the urgent questions of energy supply and social responsibility towards its citizens.
