Göttingen RoKo dormitory shines after 38.7 million euros renovation!
Robert-Koch-Straße in Göttingen can breathe a sigh of relief again: after months of construction, the RoKo student residence shines in new splendor. As the Göttinger Tageblatt reports, the extensive renovation has now been completed and the building will be available to students in time for the 2024 winter semester. The investments of around 38.7 million euros were worth it; In addition to the modern standard of the rooms, barrier-free access was also created.
An enormous construction volume, consisting of over 28 million euros for the actual renovation, including fire protection and the renewal of the infrastructure, is being invested in the historic building, which has existed since the 1970s. Built at that time, the RoKo was in need of renovation. The first construction site opened its doors in October 2021, and all the changes are accompanied by a clear vision: a residence that meets the needs of modern students while maintaining the highest safety standards. This is also highlighted by the HNA, which has listed the various measures, such as energy-saving renovation and the renewal of the elevators.
Extensive improvements
In addition to the core renovation, those responsible focused on a contemporary design. Professionally renovated, the new common rooms and outdoor areas impress with inviting seating and numerous bicycle and motorcycle parking spaces. Newly laid out paths and paved areas create a friendly overall appearance that invites you to linger. The outbuildings were also included in the overall process. Spaces can now be created here for communal events.
The preparatory work for this extensive restoration began in July 2021, when the first scaffolding was erected. Throughout the entire renovation period, the Göttingen Student Union ensured that students were not left behind. Individual offers to move to other dormitories were organized in a timely manner. The Studentenwerk, which has around 40 halls of residence with around 4,800 places in its portfolio, shows a good knack for providing the best possible care for its tenants.
A future-oriented concept
With the RoKo, the Göttingen Student Union has not only renovated a dormitory, but also set a milestone in the history of its infrastructure. It shows that old buildings can be made future-proof through innovative approaches and modern technologies. This is particularly important as students today are not only looking for a roof over their heads, but also want to experience community and enjoy events.
The project in Göttingen is part of a broader strategy within Germany, where several student residences are being extensively renovated or newly built. The first student campus with DGNB platinum status was created in Rosenheim, with a focus on sustainability and energy-efficient building solutions. Such trends are also noticeable in Göttingen, where in addition to renovations, new building projects such as the Lutterterrasse were launched.
The RoKo not only meets the current needs of students, but also sets standards for future projects in the region. Who would have thought that a building built in the 1970s could have so much future potential today? The RoKo is not only a place to live, but also a symbol of change and progress.
