Hero from Bad Lauterberg saves 91-year-old from life-threatening danger!

Luckily, things ended well in the Harz on June 15, 2025: An attentive resident from Bad Lauterberg heard noises coming from a densely overgrown property and wanted to get to the bottom of the matter. He discovered a 91-year-old woman from the Gifhorn area who had been missing since June 10th. Injured but responsive, she lay under bushes on a slope. Thanks to quick rescue measures by the police, fire brigade and emergency services, the senior citizen was quickly taken to Herzberg Hospital.

The police expressed their thanks not only to the woman's finder, but also to all the volunteers who actively helped. “It is always impressive how the community works together to help people in need,” said a police spokesman. This incident is a reminder of the importance of being mindful and caring for those around you.

The search for missing people

But it's not just this happy outcome that concerns the city of Bad Lauterberg. Hundreds of emergency services have just been mobilized to search for another missing person, 55-year-old Stefan W.. He has been missing since December 2, 2025 after he left his apartment on Thursday evening and did not return. To date, the police have found no evidence of foul play, but they still hope that the missing person will soon be found alive.

In Germany, despite the high clearance rate of around 80% of missing person cases, there are still many unsolved fates known. As the Südkurier reports in an article, around 9,300 missing person cases were reported to the Federal Criminal Police Office in 2023.

Examples of unsolved cases

Although the majority of people return within a short period of time, some cases remain unsolved in the long term. Recently, many people in Germany disappeared under tragic conditions. Examples include 26-year-old Scarlett S., who disappeared during a hiking tour on the Schluchtensteig, or 17-year-old Joachim Bruckauf, who never arrived on the way to his grandfather's hospital in 1984. These fates illustrate the need to be helpful and keep your eyes open.

Here in Northern Germany, however, we can see how even critical life situations can be overcome thanks to community commitment and rapid response to emergency situations. A lifesaver can also come from the neighborhood, and that is what unites us all here in Bad Lauterberg.

A shared responsibility remains: If someone is missing or you hear unusual noises, don't hesitate to get in touch! The authorities are happy to receive information that could help solve such cases quickly.
