NDR Non-Fiction Prize 2025: Three works on the shortlist in focus!

An exciting evening is ahead, because today, November 6th, 2025, the NDR Non-Fiction Prize will be awarded. The highly anticipated event will take place on the Sartorius Campus in Göttingen, starting at 7 p.m. If you can't make it live on site, you can easily follow the awards ceremony in the live stream on NDR Kultur. This year there are three impressive works on the shortlist that deal with highly topical topics: gender medicine, life and death, and coming to terms with the family past. These books not only provide information, but also combine scientific findings with personal reflections and social relevance, as NDR reports.

The NDR Non-Fiction Prize, which has been awarded since 2009, aims to honor the best non-fiction book of the year written in German. This year, a total of 120 submissions were closely examined by the nomination committee. The jury narrowed the selection down to three titles that deal with particularly future-relevant questions and are therefore very popular today.

A look behind the scenes at NDR

The Norddeutscher Rundfunk, an important state broadcasting company, fulfills an important mission: to inform, educate and entertain the citizens of Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. Since its founding in 1954, NDR has become a central part of the media offering in northern Germany. Its headquarters are in Hamburg and the institution is a member of ARD. Over 3,400 employees bring a wide range of program content to the screens every day.

The NDR not only has numerous radio stations, including the historic NDR 90.3, but also several state radio stations in the state capitals of Hanover, Kiel and Schwerin. NDR's commitment goes far beyond daily news; the institution is also active in production for other radio and television companies such as Das Erste and Arte. What is particularly effective is the fact that NDR contributes 17.45% to the community program Das Erste, which underlines its enormous importance in Germany-wide broadcasting.

The future in focus

But NDR is not only in demand in the area of non-fiction prizes. Future-oriented projects are an integral part of the program design. In 2026, an exciting new format about the rapper Xatar will come to the ARD media library Mirror reported. This documentary series promises to offer fresh insights into the music scene and is another example of how NDR takes up new trends and current topics.

Today's award ceremony for the NDR Non-Fiction Prize will therefore not only be a celebratory act, but also part of a long tradition that the institution has brought to life to shed light on important social issues and promote discussions. Even though the event is in the spotlight, NDR always shows itself to be closely linked to social development.
