Disturbing the peace in Göttingen: Police take party couple into custody!

An unexpected police operation caused a stir on October 5, 2025 around 5 p.m. in the courtyard of an apartment building on Groner Landstrasse in Göttingen. The reason the officers intervened was a disturbance caused by loud music blaring from a Bluetooth box. Around 50 people, including suspected residents of various ages, created a deafening noise and some of them appeared to be heavily intoxicated.

Police were called after complaints were received. The officers had no choice but to repeatedly remind people to reduce the volume of the music. But despite this request, the volume continued to rise, which ultimately led to the announcement that the loudspeaker box would be secured. This led to the guests present to show solidarity and act aggressively against the police.

Police action and detention

The situation escalated to such an extent that police officers had to use physical force to regain control. A 41-year-old main aggressor, who refused to obey the expulsion, was taken into custody. His 42-year-old wife, who also disrupted police operations, shared his fate. It was reported that both remained in custody until the evening hours, which was confirmed by the on-call judge at the Göttingen district court.

Fortunately, there were no injuries in this incident, either among the police officers or among those arrested. After the couple had been transported away, the tense situation in the courtyard calmed down and the others present withdrew.

Legal framework

The legal framework for a police operation due to disturbing the peace is diverse in Germany. As a rule, the costs of such operations are financed through tax revenues, which means that the general public pays for them, even if individuals are responsible for the noise pollution. As Typothek states, in certain cases the perpetrators can be asked to pay, especially in the case of repeated or deliberate disturbances of the peace. Depending on the federal state, fines for disturbing the peace can range from 5 euros to 5,000 euros.

The responsibilities are clearly distributed: the police intervene directly in the event of acute disturbances of the peace, while the public order office takes preventive measures and, if necessary, imposes administrative penalties. In the event of repeated disturbances, a detailed noise diary can be helpful in taking legal action or claiming a rent reduction.

In Göttingen, as in many other cities, there are strict quiet times. These are generally from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and even more consideration is required on Sundays and public holidays. Anyone who doesn't comply will face consequences.

In summary, it can be said that behavior that disturbs the peace is not taken lightly and can have legal and financial consequences. And with this harsh response from the police, it could perhaps give some people a new incentive to keep an eye on the volume a little more.
