Fireworks at the shooting festival in Goslar are canceled due to the risk of fire!
The anticipation for the Goslar shooting festival was suddenly curbed on Friday, July 4th. The fireworks display planned for the evening will not take place. According to the information from the Goslar newspaper The city administration made this decision on Friday morning due to the ongoing drought and the associated high risk of fire. Press spokeswoman Daniela Siegl explained that the decision was made in coordination with the city fire chief and was primarily a reaction to the current weather situation and recent fire incidents.
There have been several wildfires in the district in the last few days, including a large forest fire on Steinberg, which was successfully fought with firefighting aircraft. The Goslar fire department was alerted here late in the evening on Sunday, June 22nd. Over 200 emergency services were mobilized to fight the flames, which spread quickly due to high temperatures and strong gusts of wind. The emergency services had to take various measures to bring the fire pockets under control.
Firefighting challenges
Fighting the forest fire presented the emergency services with major challenges. Many areas were difficult to access due to trees at risk of falling, and a helicopter was also supporting the aerial firefighting efforts. The city of Goslar urgently appealed to the population to avoid the affected areas in order not to further endanger the emergency services. Nevertheless, the situation on site remains under control, and Mayor Urte Schwerdtner did not fail to thank those involved for their tireless efforts.
The fire above the Grane Dam is a clear indication of the increased risk of forest fires, which, according to the Federal Environment Agency, has increased in certain regions of Germany in recent years. This development is primarily due to extreme weather conditions, which often lead to devastating forest fires in the summer months. The latest statistics show that between 2018 and 2019 the number of forest fires in Germany rose sharply, especially in northeast Germany.
Forest fire danger in focus
Although there was a significant decrease in the area of forest fires in Germany between 1991 and 2017, the issue remains highly topical due to climatic changes and frequent dry periods. In 2018, over 1,700 forest fires were registered in Germany alone, and 2019 was not a good year either, with an area of more than 2,700 hectares affected.
The worrying development raises questions: What measures can be taken to counter the growing threat of wildfires? Experts recommend continuous improvement of firefighting systems, including targeted training for emergency services. Preventative measures such as improved digital sensors for early forest fire detection are also a step in the right direction.
Although the city has to forego the traditional fireworks display today, it remains to be seen how the next few days will turn out. What is certain is that everyone involved is doing their best to minimize the risk of fire and ensure a safe process for the public.
