Breslauer Straße: Instead of eco-paving there is now composite paving!

Things are moving forward on Breslauer Straße in Afferde! The second construction phase will begin on July 15, 2025, with the aim of improving the climate and making the road more sustainable. As part of this project, not only are 20 new trees to be planted, but the surface sealing is also to be reduced by almost 30 percent. This is a clear message in times when environmental protection and climate adaptation are very important. But there is also a downside: the originally planned “eco-paving” for the parking spaces cannot be implemented. The reason? The surface water in Breslauer Straße is not clean enough to allow seepage, as Dewezet reports.

Markus Brockmann, head of the Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Transport, warns about the contamination of surface water, which also brought the FDP into action. The parliamentary group leader Rüdiger Zemlin expressed concerns about possible pollutants in the groundwater. In this context, it was determined that the rainwater in Breslauer Straße is considered moderately polluted according to pollution category II. Instead of the environmentally friendly eco-paving, composite stone paving is now being used, which, according to the town hall spokeswoman, should not be more expensive than the originally planned variant.

The renovation of Breslauer Straße

The renovation work on Breslauer Straße did not happen overnight. Work has been underway here in several construction phases since September 2022. As part of the pedestrian and cycle path conversion, hedges currently have to be cleared and trees felled. From the beginning of June, the pedestrian and cycle path will be combined to a total width of 3.0 meters in order to create a better separation between the street and the sidewalks, as the Kreisbote explains. It is also planned to green the new green strip with small bushes that will serve as a snow collection area in winter.

The construction work pursues the goal of sustainable urban development, which does not just focus on the technical feasibility of the measures. According to the Umweltbundesamt the focus is on promoting lively and livable settlements. The areas of responsibility are diverse: from planning for residential and commercial areas to funding programs to improve urban areas.

A total of four construction phases are planned for Breslauer Straße. The third construction phase is scheduled for next year between Von-den-Hoff-Straße and Danziger Platz, where central islands will also be paved and planted. The final construction phase is scheduled for 2025 and includes the renovation of sidewalks and cycle paths as well as bus stops. In total, the costs for the second construction phase amount to around 990,000 euros, while the first already took around 200,000 euros.

The project on Breslauer Straße is therefore not just a road construction project, but an example of sustainable urban development. Social, economic and environmental requirements should be brought into harmony. A good hand in planning is required here in order to noticeably improve the quality of life in Afferde.
