Major construction site in Hameln: Five bridges completely new by 2030!

Times are changing, and this also applies to the infrastructure in Hameln. From 2029/30, Deisterstrasse in the city will become a major construction site as Deutsche Bahn plans to build five new railway bridges. Those affected include Deisterstrasse, Hamelner Strasse, Reginastrasse, Kreuzstrasse and Tunnelstrasse. Extensive traffic chaos is to be expected as the construction work will lead to closures, diversions and restrictions on the B1/B217. This is reported by the Dewezet.

As part of the planned major construction site, it will be necessary to demolish the old steel bridges and build new abutments. In Deisterstrasse, the road level even has to be lowered, which leads to adjustments to the existing junctions. In order to maintain traffic during construction, Kreuzstrasse - which serves as a diversion - will be completed in time before work on Deisterstrasse begins. Pedestrians and cyclists are also encouraged to navigate across the cemetery crossing during the closures.

Construction time and planning

The construction project will take place over several years and the schedules are as follows:

  • Kreuzstraße: April 2027 bis April 2028 (Rückbau und Neubau der Gleisbrücken, Straßenanpassung bis November 2028).
  • Reginastraße: März bis Oktober 2028 (Rückbau und Neubau der Brücke, Straßenanpassung).
  • Hamelner Straße: August 2028 bis Dezember 2029 (Rückbau und Neubau der Brücke, Vorarbeiten ab März 2028).
  • Deisterstraße: Herbst 2029 bis Frühjahr 2030 (Rückbau und Neubau der Brücke, Vorbereitungen beginnen 2026).
  • Tunnelstraße: Nach 2030, nach Abschluss der anderen Projekte.

Another important point is the online information event that will take place on December 9th at 5 p.m. This event offers residents the opportunity to learn about the construction projects and ask questions. Those interested can use the link register.

Renewal of railway overpasses

In addition to the major construction site on Deisterstrasse, Deutsche Bahn has begun work on renewing the “Fluthamel” railway bridge. This bridge, which dates back to 1905, will be replaced by a new structure that will be prefabricated in the neighboring construction site. The new bridge is scheduled to be inserted in November 2025, with the current bridge being completely demolished beforehand. During this time, the Hanover–Altenbeken railway line will be closed from November 7th to 15th, 2025, and the Hanover S-Bahn will announce corresponding timetable changes. Ohsener Straße will also be completely closed to motorized traffic during this period, while pedestrians and cyclists can use alternative routes.

To ensure the safety and modernity of railway bridges in Germany, all 25,700 railway bridges are regularly inspected. Over 11,000 of these bridges are more than 100 years old. Deutsche Bahn has therefore launched a comprehensive modernization program. Experts now use digital tools to assess the condition of the bridges and efficiently plan necessary work. Information about this can be found on the website German railways.

You can tell that there is a lot of movement here in Hameln, and the coming years will be exciting as the city has to adapt to the many changes.
