Senior Thug House: New living space for homeless people in Hameln!

In Hameln, we are actively working on solutions to give people in need a roof over their heads. The Senior-Schschläger-Haus-Verein, led by Christof Vetter and Heinz Ahlers, has taken on this challenge. Since purchasing the house 17 years ago and becoming debt-free last year, the association now has the resources to further deepen its mission while making the housing market more accessible to particularly disadvantaged groups. The association plans to acquire property and rent it specifically to people who are homeless or have become homeless. Dewezet reports.

The Senior-Schschläger-Haus already has two apartments available for rent, which contribute to the financing of the association. “We understand people who have difficulty paying their rent on time,” says Christof Vetter. “For us, it’s about helping the tenants and offering them prospects again.” This attitude is particularly important because the challenges faced by homeless people are often diverse. In Germany alone, many struggle with social isolation, health problems or bureaucratic hurdles. Targeted support offers should play a crucial role here.

A central point of contact

The Senior Thug House not only functions as a living space, but also as an important contact point for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. It offers a day meeting, an advice center and a doctor's consultation in order to specifically address the needs of those seeking help. Combining these offers in one house makes it easier to access the help you need. In this way, needs for help can be identified more quickly and assistance can be offered more efficiently, explains Diakonie Hameln-Pyrmont, which supports the project. There is also an overnight shelter in the attic for homeless people who are looking for temporary accommodation.

Here you will find protected spaces in which those seeking advice can experience not only accommodation but also a community. The offering also includes a homeless breakfast and a Sunday café to promote social interaction. “It is important to offer these people a point of contact,” says Ahlers.

The path to more living space

But the work of the Senior Thug House Association does not end with the provision of living space. The association is looking for additional properties in the city of Hameln that do not require extensive renovations. A broker has already been hired to find suitable properties. The association receives support not only from local housing associations, but also from the Diakonisches Werk in Hanover, which provides extensive assistance in the area of emergency housing assistance. The Hameln-Pyrmont church emphasizes that the goal is not only to provide housing, but also to support those affected in their individual life situations.

In view of the current situation, it is crucial that the social conditions are improved. Diakonie supports the national action plan against homelessness, which aims to eliminate homelessness and homelessness in Germany by 2030. Measures such as the provision of affordable housing and strengthening preventive measures are of great importance here. In summary The challenges, particularly for homeless people, are directly linked to social and economic problems. It is now important to work together on a solution and to offer as many people as possible a safe place to live.
